Dr. Richard Harmer Trust Fund
The Chief Logan Reservation Staff Alumni Association in collaboration with the family of Dr. Richard Harmer have joined together to form a trust fund to honor Dr. Harmer's memory and to provide camperships to scouts wanting to attend Chief Logan Reservation who otherwise might not be able to attend.  The Trust Fund may also support improvement projects at Chief Logan Reservation.  The Harmer Trust Fund was created by Dr. Harmer's family at the time of his death in July, 2001, and is supported by contributions from the family and friends of Dr. Harmer.
Richard Sharpless Harmer III died July 16, 2001 in Dayton at the age of 59.  His university education was completed entirely at the University of Illinois where he received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Ceramic Engineering.  While pursuing his graduate studies at Illinois, he also managed the electron microscope lab.  Upon finishing his doctoral studies, Dick moved to Dayton and began his relationship with the University of Dayton, where he established the electron microscope lab, taught materials engineering, and worked on various research contracts. He also taught astronomy and was the University Radiation Safety Officer. Dick was an Eagle Scout and carried out the Eagle Charge his entire life.  He was involved in the Scouting Program at almost every level, from the unit (He was a Scoutmaster) to the District and Council level where he served on committees and helped organize special events.  Dick came to Chief Logan with his unit, but stayed to become one of the most valued and most fondly remembered staff members.  Dick served Chief Logan Reservation as Provisional Scoutmaster, Commissioner, and, in his most important role, as Quartermaster.  He organized the QM are to the extent that every piece of equipment we owned was his intimate acquaintance.  He, quite simply, loved his "cave", where the equipment was kept and where he lived during camp.
But Dick's volunteerism was not limited to Scouting.  He was an active member and officer of the Miami Valley Astronomical Society.  He helped with programs for both youth and adults at the Dayton Museum of Natural History, the Observatory at John Bryan State Park and the Kettering Schools.  he was an avid gardener and in his latter years became interested in genealogy.
One of the reasons the the Chief Logan Reservation Staff Alumni Association exists is to assure that there will always be opportunities for staff members, past and present, to be together and share a story about camp.  Dick would have loved that.  He would have as many stories to tell as there are stories told by others about him and he would laugh at all of them.  Dick Harmer was a good Scout and a good man and he loved Chief Logan Reservation.
